What Kind of Fishing Can You Do in Cocoa Beach?

The Space Coast is one of Florida’s most diverse fishing destinations. Whether you’re chasing flats species in the Indian River Lagoon or heading offshore into the Atlantic, there’s something for every angler here. Inshore fishing is popular year-round for redfish, snook, and speckled trout, while the nearshore reefs and wrecks hold cobia, flounder, and Spanish mackerel. Offshore, anglers target sailfish, mahi-mahi, wahoo, and blackfin tuna. The Indian River Lagoon — one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America — also makes this area a premier destination for fly fishing and light tackle.

When Is the Best Time to Fish the Space Coast?

Cocoa Beach offers great fishing year-round, but each season has its highlights.

Spring (Mar–May) — Cobia migrate through in large numbers; tarpon begin showing up; great time for inshore snook and redfish.

Summer (Jun–Aug) — Peak tarpon season in the lagoon; offshore mahi-mahi and sailfish; early morning inshore trips are excellent.

Fall (Sep–Nov) — Redfish are schooling and highly active; Spanish mackerel and bluefish run nearshore; one of the most exciting seasons overall.

Winter (Dec–Feb) — Cooler water slows some species, but sheepshead, flounder, and black drum are in full swing. Fewer crowds, great conditions.

While You're on the Water…

Don’t miss the dolphins. Cocoa Beach Eco Tours offers unforgettable dolphin and wildlife eco tours right here in the same waters. Come for the fishing, stay for the show.
